Daniel McInerney(1869-1960) was born in Clenagh, near Newmarket-on-Fergus, the youngest surviving in a family of fifteen, although at least four of his siblings died in infancy.
In the 1901 Census, we find that Daniel had set up business as a flour merchant with his older brother Patrick in Cornmarket Street, Ennis. Meanwhile another brother James remained on the farm at Clenagh. In 1905, Patrick married Margaret Hannon, from Galway, and settled on a farm in Manusmore. In 1907 Daniel married Mary Hession, of Co Mayo, whilst carrying on the business in Cornmarket Street, and later in Mill Road. In 1931 Daniel purchased the fine nearby residence Woodlands which had replaced an earlier home burnt down in 1921.

There were two other merchant members of this McInerney family. John McInerney(1856-1933) married Catherine Murphy(1868-1934) of Ballicorick in 1893, and set up business in Parliament Street Ennistymon, where the business has prospered ever since. Michael McInerney(1859-1933) married Mai Garry(1885-1913) of Shanahea, and established a supermarket dynasty in Loughrea, spanning five generations of his family. The marriage of Michael and Mai in Limerick in 1905 was a celebration of the close ties between the three families - Garry, McInerney and Murphy, with business relationships being enhanced by five separate marriages between the families. The list of expensive gifts bestowed upon the newly weds was some indication of the resultant affluence arising from these business ties.
