In relation to an issue raised by Murf in recent posting re Murphy and O'Hehir families. My understanding, from a study of my O'Hehirs (from Commons South) is that the O was dropped from many Irish names by the English administrators from the time of the Cromwellian "settlement". Thus the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffiths Valuation sources that many of us use show the names without O. A lot of the migrants reclaimed their original names on arrival (or some time after). I have found a few Irish reclaiming the Gaelic spelling of O'Hehir in the 1901 Census. Some of my O'Hehirs continued without the O, whilst others did reclaim it.
cheers, Kerry
from O'Hehir to Hehir to O'Hehir!!
